Sponsored by the International Autoimmune Arthritis Movement (IAAM), World Autoimmune Arthritis Day (WAAD) is a new global event held on May 20th each year. Set to coincide with National Arthritis Month, WAAD aims to raise global awareness about autoimmune arthritis.
'Autoimmune arthritis' is a term coined by the IAAM in 2009 and is used to classify diseases caused by immune system malfunction with primary joint involvement. Autoimmune diseases are chronic, inflammatory, and systemic (they can affect the whole body). Whilst there are many types of arthritis and autoimmune diseases, there are relatively few diseases which fall into both arthritis and autoimmune disease categories.

Types of autoimmune arthritis recognized by the IAAM include:
|Date||Tue 20th May 2014|
|Days To Event||160 Days|
|How Is Date Set?||Same date each year|
WAAD aims to raise awareness about this smaller group of autoimmune arthritis diseases and is supported by the International Autoimmune Arthritis Movement (IAAM). IAAM is the first organization to focus primarily on autoimmune arthritis and is committed to:
“eliminating the adversity caused by autoimmune arthritis by raising global awareness, providing wellness alternatives, and uniting resources that will improve the quality of life for those affected by these diseases”.
A primary objective of this event is to make people aware that arthritis is not just an umbrella term which refers to a condition associated with aches and pains in the joints. An autoimmune arthritis disease can affect any part of the body including the organs. It is hoped that more members of the public will become aware that autoimmune arthritis is different from other types of arthritis.
The organizers of World Autoimmune Arthritis Day have embraced social media technologies to raise awareness of this small group of diseases. People can follow this event on Twitter and there is a dedicated Facebook page
On this day (May 20th) there will be an online convention in which live and on demand presentations will be made.
The WAAD website also features merchandise for sale which includes t-shirts, mugs, phone cases and other items emblazoned with the WAAD logo. The proceeds raised help fund this campaign.
