Acetyl L-carnitine Dosage
Doses of carnitine based supplements will vary depending on the condition being treated or if it is being taken for general wellness or exercise benefits.
Doses between 1 and 3 grams of carnitine are usually taken. Greater quantities are more likely to cause side effects.
Incidentally, only about 2 grams of carnitine can be absorbed in one dose.

Carnitine taken for an existing medical condition should always be discussed with a doctor first. As a guide for dosage:
- Angina :a dose of carnitine between 1.5g and 2g a day
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: a dose of 500mg 3 times a day
- Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD): between 2g & 4g a day

For body building, general exercise and wellness, a dose of 500mg, 3 times a day, is often advised by manufacturers of acetyl l-carnitine supplements.
Acetyl L-Carnitine Side Effects, Safety Risks & Dangers
Acetyl l-carnitine is generally well tolerated.
Any side effects are usually mild.
At higher doses, side effects may include:
- diarrhea
- rash
- body odor
- an increase in appetite
There are no known risks and dangers of carnitine. However, there are a number of conditions which l-carnitine supplements may cause complications. These may include medications for:
- Cirrhosis – liver disease caused by alcohol
- Diabetes
- High Blood Pressure / Hypertension
- Kidney Disease
- PVD – Peripheral Vascular Disease
